The field work in caring for your pearly whites is still up to you even if your good old dentist can do miracles for your teeth, from whitening, fixing, filling or even replacing them! Experts recommend adequate flossing and brushing as well as avoiding chewing on hard objects while keeping an eye on the food and medicine you take in. Chewing on pencils, paper clips and the like will inevitably cause trouble for your teeth as stated by an assistant professor in periodontics. People who chew on things usually place the items at the same place in the mouth each time. This can cause wear not only on the teeth but also to the gum line, which eventually will pull away from the tooth.

A huge surprise comes from ingesting acidic food like citrus. Individuals who drink citrus juices on the belief that they're being healthy actually don't realize that they might be causing damage to their gums and teeth. Make sure that your mouth is never dry once you start taking medicines. The saliva flow and composition naturally clean the gums and teeth but it can be reduced due to the intake of drugs like blood pressure medicines, tranquilizers, antihistamines, antidepressants, relaxants for muscles and other like substances.

He shares that those on the above mentioned medication must always rinse their mouths thoroughly right after they eat and brush their teeth. Sipping water every minute and stimulating the flow of saliva through sugarless gum or paraffin chewing is recommended. Many people can consider getting a boost by asking their dentists for artificial saliva.

A reason some people point as to why they won't brush when they should is because they're not at home. Rinsing thoroughly is a good alternative when you are out and do not have a toothbrush and toothpaste on hand. Taking in water to swirl around the mouth vigorously helps in eliminating the bits and pieces of food stuck in the teeth. During brushing, it's important to have a brush with tender bristles and doing it in a circular manner. The gums can be driven away and cause tooth deterioration when improper brushing techniques and brushes are used.

The associate professor further adds that a powerful weapon against tooth decay is a simple little string of dental floss. The dirt stuck between teeth and below gums might not be removed by the toothbrush but using a dental floss can resolve this. He opines that as long as the method is right, the kind of floss used will not matter. Move the floss on all the sides of the teeth and down to the crevice where it meets the gums and keep gliding it but make sure that there is not a tinge of pain.

Although there might be some blood show when you begin to floss, this is not a cause of alarm according to the professor. It can be done in about two weeks or less as flossing continues and enables the gums to be healthy and supple. Once permanent teeth have set in, it's important for adults and kids to use floss regularly. Our children must learn the value of flossing and how it prevents periodontal disease early on which can become a full blown disease a couple of years after.
